Project 1 Progress
So far, I have gotten most of my introduction written. -That including the syntheses. Although I do still need to add more to my synthesis! I want to find more people or sources to relate it all together. I need to start writing my body though. But at the same time, how much do I really need to write?.. What is the difference if I state (for a paragraph or two) bullet points rather than making a full paragraph? I think because my paper is dealing with the flow.. It can all be different. I plan on getting a few more sources and using what I have learned (from what we have been doing in class) to add to everything. I would also like to add more basic information or examples to my topic. I need to do more research on flow. I really liked the workshop. I hope that we can have more of those. Personally, it really made it a lot easier for someone else to read what I wrote so that they can tell me what they liked or didn't. I was able to get more ideas from other people and I believe that in the long run that will help with everything.
Bryson sept 24
Bryson.
Before You Read.
I consider good english to be something that is able to be understood and made clear. Bad english to me is throwing out words that don't make sense in the middle of sentences and not pronouncing words correctly. I believe I consider all of this because of how I was brought up. The english I use is what I am used to and what I consider good english.
Summary.
In Bryson's article, "Good English and Bad", he explains and talks about the "laws" of the English language. Yes, the English language is mainly from the Latin language, yet they aren't that similar. Overall, he goes on about the struggle of what "Good English" is and what "Bad English" is.
Synthesis.
I feel that one person that is able to connect with this article is Porter. Porter wants rules to be in place but shouldn't make the writer not be him/herself. He wants the writer to be able to write whatever they want without having to think that what they are writing is right or wrong. A second person I think that can relate to this is Dawkins. Both him and Bryson talk a little bit about the "rules" of the english language. Overall, there is really no right or wrong way to write.
Thoughts.
This wasn't my favorite article to read. Yes, Bryson does a good job at explaining everything and what he had to say was very interesting. I was able to learn more about the "rules" of the english language.
Dawkins.

1. My sister's tree house, made of wood, scraps and cardboard was a great place to play with her friends.
2. My sister's tree house, made of wood, scraps and cardboard, made a great place to play with her friends.
3. My sister's tree house made a great place to play with her friends; it was made of wood scraps and cardboard.
In the first sentence I used two commas to break up the information. In the second sentence I used three commas to break up the information so that it was different than the first. In the third sentence, I used a semi-colon to break the sentence into two parts.
Summary.
In Dawkin's article, "Teaching Punctuation as a Rehtorical Tool", he basically is trying to say that people have issues with understanding punctuation rules. He says in what manners we can actually use punctuation and when it is necessary. He also says that there really isn't too many ways to use punctuation in a wrong way. Overall, he just gives so many examples having to do with punctuation.
Synthesis.
For one, I believe that McCloud can be related to this article. Dawkin used visuals in his article and I found that very helpful to visually see what he was talking about. It helped get the point across. Second, I feel that Porter is another person that can be related in this article. I think this because it seems that both Porter and Dawkin think that the writer should be able to write without worrying if what they are writing is incorrect or not.
Q5.
Personally I learned that punctuation can vary depending on the writer of the article. There really isn't a right or wrong way to use punctuation. -It depends on who you talk to.
MM.
I feel that my teacher wanted me to read this because I am able to learn a lot from just this simple article. It was very through and I did learn some new things. I will be able to use what I have learned and put it towards my work for the future.
Thoughts.
I feel that he talked a lot about the same information over and over. yes, it was effective and all but maybe a little too much. Punctuation is very important and can help get points across easier in anything a reader is reading. I did learn some new things, so it wasn't a waste.

| To me, this is saying that within our nation, English is what we make of it. People may say things differently, but most people will be able to understand them if they are from this nation. | “In English, in short, we possess a language in which the parts of speech are almost entirely notional” (61). |
| This was funny to me because the English language can be very confusing. There are so many things that people don't understand even though we speak the language everyday. | “The complexities of English are such that the authorities themselves often stumble” (61). |
| I found this cool because our language came from Latin grammar. I have never taken the language Latin, but I hear it is very close to the English language. -This is why. | “The early authorities not only used Latin grammar as their model, but actually went to the almost farcical length of writing English grammars in that language..” (62). |
| There is really no “one person” to have them say something is right or wrong about the English language. The language just relies on what has happened over time. | “Without an official academy to guide us, the English-speaking world has long relied on self-appointed authorities such as..” (64). |

| When I read this I basically just thought that it was said in a way that punctuation is so normal. No one really thinks about not having it in writing. It is just a “mechanic” of writing. Ordinary. | “Punctuation-just one the “mechanics” of writing, after all..” (140). |
| For me this was saying that handbooks give no room for lead way. They are straight and right to the point. If you follow what the handbooks say, it won't be the best work produced. | “According to the handbooks, Orwell is wrong, for their rules are essentially a right-or-wrong approach, providing little-if any-basis for considering options according to rhetorical intentions” (141). |
| This is just saying that there are many ways to write a sentence. Using different punctuation, it is possible to say a sentence many different ways. | “-there is a number of other options for making this boundary between independent clauses” (142). |
| Again, I just think it is very interesting to see that with punctuation, sentences can be written in so many different ways. | “Sentences can be analyzed as single independent clauses with or without attachments or as multiple independent clauses with or without attachments” (143). |

Bernhardt
Before you Read.
I am currently looking at a piece of yellow paper for Wings Over Athens. I am drawn to the name of the place because it is center and it is a large image at the top of the page. There are a lot of kinds of wings and whatnot and what is available to get. It is a two sided paper and both sides are covered in words. I am drawn to look at this piece of paper and I am hungry right now so I am interested in what I just read.
Summary.
In Bernhardt's article, "Seeing the Text", he basically is trying to get the point across that images can be just as important as words at certain times. Also, the images can back up text in places just as text can better explain images. Overall, more images (visuals) can help the reader better understand what he or she is reading.
Synthesis.
One person that is easy to compare with Bernhardt's article is McCloud's. Clearly both of these two writers think that images are important and can help get a point across more clear. Bernhardt uses charts and visuals and McCloud uses comics. I also think that another person that Bernhardt's article can compare with is Steven King's. I would say this because both use things and try to use them to relate to writing. And yes, overall, both want to help the reader become a better writer.
After you Read.
I think that McCloud would have made an actual comic about his article. If this was the case, I think that Bernhardt's article would have been A LOT better. Because yes, it was boring to read. I think that both would agree that images and/or visuals are very important to use when writing.
Thoughts.
Overall, I agree with Bernhardt. I think that having visuals in writing is important and can make the reader so much more interested in what he/she is writing. This article was a little dry to read though

This is saying that if students were able to/used visuals in what they wrote, they would understand what they were writing about more. Not only would the writer learn more, but the reader would also be able to understand it more too.
|
"If we were to encourage students to experiment with visible features of written texts, we would increase their ability to understand and use hierarchical and classificatory arrangement" (35).
|
|
I believe that this is saying that when the writer uses visuals it is easier to get the point across. With visuals, the reader is also able to understand the point better too.
|
"Writing, especially when visually informative, encourages the writer to be exact about grouping related ideas, delineating beginnings and endings, and using cues to signal to the reader a graphic representation of cognitive organization" (35).
|
|
I thought this was funny when I read this because we were just talking about this in class. The introduction/body/conclusion of an essay is where it gets tricky. Now that learning that there doesn't have to be an introduction and 3 paragraphs and a conclusion.
|
"In a non-visually informative expository text, rhetorical control is typically exercised through the familiar strategies of essay composition. Introduction/body/conclusion…" (36).
|
|
I believe that this just shows that how you word certain sentences or text in a paper can have a different kind of affect to the reader. Placing text in different spots can change the out come.

"Also important in the design of the fact sheet was the distribution of printed information on the page" (39).

Porter
Summary.
In Porter's article, "Intertextuality and the Discourse Community" he describes what he thinks about plagiarism in a way. He basically says that all writing is from some of another in the past and that all text is has some sort of trace of other text. He somewhat uses the word "borrowing" for what taking text is. Bottom line, plagiarism isn't always what we exactly think it is.
Synthesis.
After reading this article I thought about Elbow's article. (Not just because we had just read it either). I just saw that both of these articles are teaching us, again how to become better writers. Elbow said that having voice in a paper is key and Porter said that we need to be creative when we write and use intertextuality.
Thoughts.
Overall this article was interesting. I like how it went into plagiarism. Intertextuality is something that I liked learning about and is something that I will have to use in the future.

Basically this is saying that writing needs to be original. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. Borrowing and copying are two different things and give someone the credit they deserve if that is where you heard or saw the information you needed/wanted.
|
"that writing must be original and that if a writer "borrows" ideas from other writing without acknowledging that borrowing, the writer is plagiarizing" (86).
|
|
This quote hit me because it is so true. I heard my high school teacher say something along the lines of this before. It is basically just saying do not plagiarize, but do research and fin d out more information from as many sources as possible to better help yourself.
|
"The creative writer is the creative borrower, in other words" (90).
|
|
I thought this was a cool quote because as the audience the writer need to produce something that will catch the readers eye and will make them keep wanting to read it.
|
"the writer creates a text which produces some change in an audience" (92).
|
|
I feel like all this is trying to say is to be creative with your writing. It is a way to express yourself and say what you want and how you want to. Some people will like it and others will not.
|
Writing is an attempt to exercise the will, to identify the self within the constraints of some discourse community" (93).
|
|
This is plain and simple. Intertextuality isn't new people just haven't known about it or haven't wanted to learn about it. It is just another factor to make your writing a lot better.
|
"Intertextuality is not new" (94).

To me, this is just saying that whatever comes to your mind, even if it may be a stupid thought, write it down anyways. You never know what could come out of a simple thought. Even over time, what ever you wrote down will always be there and it will be waiting to be chosen.
|
"Just get it sown on the paper, because there may be something great in those six crazy pages that would never have gotten to by more rational grown-up means" (302).
|
|
This is basically saying that every published book or article started out somewhere; just not where it was at the end. Yes, it may start out as a bad article but it takes time to revise and make what is written even better.
|
"Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts" (303).
|
|
All writers may seem weird on the outside, but deep down they have an idea. -To entertain people. They will always have a feeling to share with others.
|
"They say writing is lonely work. But that's an exaggeration. Even alone at their desks, writers entertain visitors" (308).
|
|
This hit me because it was simple and straight to the point. Basically, write with feeling and creativity. Write with meaning.
|
"Treat writing like a sacred act" (309).
|
|
This is just saying that writing is meant to be creative. You can express yourself in what you write. This can also be a stress reliever.
|
"Writing is finally a series of permissions you will give yourself to be expressive in certain ways" (316).
|
|
I found this interesting because he actually uses himself and his past experiences to use in his articles and stories. I think that this is very good information to know and keep.
|
"Needless to say, I lend bits of myself to all my characters" (317).
|
|
This is basically talking about writers block. It CAN and WILL take time to write. Everyone is different and ideas will come eventually. You can't force yourself to write. It has to almost come natural so that the article or book can be good and creative.
|
"It wasn't that I couldn't write. I wrote every day. I actually worked really hard at writing" (319).

Elbow September 14
Before you Read.
I think that with my Facebook, there is nothing really for me to hide and whatnot. I do not post anything bad or anything that is harmful towards anyone and I just be careful of what I do. It is almost as if my Facebook life is the exact same thing as my real life. There is nothing to hide and I am always just being myself. The way people see me in person is the same they can see me on Facebook.
Summary.
In Elbow's article, "Voice in Writing Again, Embracing Contraries" came across to me as searching for having a voice in writing. He explains that there are things to do and not to do. Basically saying that there are things to do to make your writing better and things to stay away from. Although at the same time, he uses both sides to explain that there can be different approaches of how to write. With having a voice in something, it is getting your point across.
Synthesis.
To me I feel like this article can connect with Allen's. I say this because of the "inspired writer" and having a voice in writing is kind of along the same guidelines. I feel that either of these can pass as something to help get an idea across to the reader.
QD.
1. Voice is like having a say or getting a point across. (Possibly to argue a point across too). Yes, I think that there are many different kinds of voice. I think bottom line that Elbow is trying to say that having a voice in writing is putting your own twist on whatever it is you are writing and to be creative.
4. Yes, I think that he is playing his "doubting and believing game". He gives you sides and ideas from both sides and wants the reader to make his/her own decision to what they think is best. There is no right or wrong answer, it is just simply up to the reader.
AE.
2. I think that it depends on what it is exactly you are listening to and how it sounds. Yes, it also depends on the reader/listener to which he or she can connect with more and get more out of something. Personally, I think that reading along with something while it is being read out loud to where I can hear it, it helps the most out of all.
MM.
I think Elbow is trying to get the point across that backing up and believing that what you said and tried to prove or get across was and is the best. With stating previous points and backing those up it will help people have more of an open mind. Also, no it isn't possible. It is just something that is key.
Thoughts.
Overall, I gained that having a voice in writing is key. It was long to read and whatnot but it was a good point. He does have good ideas and points though.

Allen.
Before You Read.
I think that the construct regarding a students' writing process is based upon what he/she learns at school. Throughout school, teachers tell the student to get sources and use those to their advantage to help write a paper. They also come up with a main point to the paper, they do outlines of their papers, rough drafts, editing to in the end, make it better. I think the process for a professional is around the same. Yes, they don't have to follow any kind of specific rules or anything but they edit, brainstorm, make drafts, redo drafts and collect information just as students do.
Summary.
In Allen's, "The inspired Writer vs. the Real Writer", he tries to get the point across to be interested in writing. Not only to be interested in others' writing but in your own too. He goes on to say how students should try and find a person so that they can read over your paper and make sure that it is good. He finally goes to say that yes, most students say that they do not like writing but they really can make something out of it and also that it is ok not knowing what to write. All writers go through stages "writers block".
Synthesis. (Combine this and the other one).
I feel that with Allen's article, he is trying to say that drafting is very effective and is a very good idea. This can relate to both Kantz's and Murray's work because in all drafting is a way to make writing better.
QD.
2. Basically Allen is saying to just get rid of or turn off the "inspired writer" so that you can just be yourself and write how you want. This will make the article so much better and will also make yourself a better writer too.
3. Yes, I have colluded many times before. I would fix up multiple things in papers that needed to be fixed after my teacher or another person read them over. No, I would not call this plagiarism at all. It is simply taking the advice of someone that wants to help and who has more experience than you do.
AE.
2.Yes, I agree with Allen 100 percent. I think that almost all forms of writing have to do with connection. I think that they may suggest something along the lines that it is not really too much of connection rather than giving information. But personally, I think almost all writing has to do with connection.
Thoughts. (This goes for both of the articles).
Overall, I didn't mind reading about this. I find it all very interesting and yes, it is helping me become a better writer.
Berkenkotter and Murray.
Before You Read.
Writing Rituals... Well, I start off with first coming up with an idea that I want to write about. I then write down ideas and find sources and quotes to back up what I am trying to explain or get across. I guess you can call it coming up with an outline of my entire paper. With regards to rituals, I really don't have any. I always have someone check my paper when I think I am done and then revise it more. I mean I guess every now and then I do take a break or two in between typing and everything.
Summary.
The point of this article is to show a writing process. Kind of like a how-to in a way. Murray explains and tells what his writing process is and with that we are able to make our judgements and possibly take some of his ideas to make our own paper/writing process even better.
Synthesis. (Combine this and the other one).
I believe that this article can relate to Kantz. Both are giving ideas (different processes or strategies) to make a paper better.
QD.
1. Well to me, it seemed like one of the first key things to do when writing a paper (the process) is to get ahold of the audience/the reader. He also revises what he writes many times throughout the entire process. Not only does he do that but he also speaks his papers out loud to himself to make sure that what he hears is good enough. If he decided to change something, he does so. What I do is write the paper, after getting all of the information I have previously written down on my outline and type my paper. I then read over the whole thing, fix it up and then have someone else read it before I turn it in. I think that speaking it out loud is a very good idea though! Also, I feel like some of what Murray and I do are similar in the process of writing.
3. He was actually able to learn a lot of information from. He learned that there was a lot of planning behind the scenes that really adds a lot to the article being written. He learned of different note taking skills and how to have a main idea and branch off into many other ideas. He also learned that proof reading/having someone else proof read the paper is a very good idea.
AE.
1. Well, I always have an idea in my head first of what I want to write about. Then, I think of a few main reasons of support or backup so that I can use those as the main topics to further more support my main idea. Then finally, after getting sources and quotes, I type my paper. After I type it, I reread the entire thing to myself in my head and fix any mistakes that I see. Finally, I have a friend or parent read it to critique it too so that I can take in their input to also help. Then I fix the paper again and turn it in. One thing that I do need to work on is making sure that not only the sentences flow together but to also make sure that the whole paper flows. I don't think that my writing experience is anything amazing or really good but I do have experience and I do want to become a better writer so I am always willing to take in other peoples' ideas and knowledge.
MM.
One thing that I learned from the readings that would most likely help me is to read my paper out loud to myself. I have never done that before but it really does seem like a good idea. That way I can hear how it sounds and can tell if it flows or not.
Thoughts.
I didn't mind this article at all to be honest. I am enjoying reading these articles because they are helping me become a better writer in all.

Thoughts on Comic Video from class.
I did think that watching this video was very interesting. The guy who was talking made it fun to listen to him and to what he was saying. Anyways, he was saying how he was the odd one out in his family and decided to go into comic art. I think that he found a way to be successful in this field because what he did and how he did it was very interesting and it caught people's eyes. Just as in McClouds work/article, comics can be a way to get an idea across and make it easy to do so. Many people are visual learners. In the video, there were so many different ways to write comics and catch peoples interest. I think that both the man in that video and McCloud himself have the right idea and can make comics not only to entertain people but to also get a certain idea across. Overall, comics are a way to get people to enjoy what they are reading and learn something new.

McCloud September 10th
McCloud.
Before You Read.
Looking back on my past, I feel like my favorite cartoon was The Far Side. I really don't see myself relating to any of the characters in that cartoon though. One of the features that helped me connect with the cartoon was the humor. A lot of the cartoon's were very funny and always had me laughing.
Summary.
To me, McCloud is showing how easy it is for people to connect with comics. No matter what the comic is, whether the reader gets the comic or not, they are able to take it the way they want to and interpret it how they like. He explains about complex and basic pictures and how different they really are.
Synthesis.
The article, "Vocabulary of Comics", is very easy to relate to Kantz' and Greenes' articles. For one, this article relates to Kantz' article because just like how he explained how to argue different ways with different ideas, comics can also show that there are creative ways to get around arguing or doing something. Second, this article relates to Greenes' article because just how he used framing to get a certain point across, comics can also be used to get a certain point across by using the same techniques.
QD.
2. First off, I think that McCloud is very smart. I love the fact that he can get his points across with comics and not with typical text. He is able to use both text and pictures to prove his point. I think that having comics really get the point across and it makes it WAY more fun for the reader too. This way, the reader is really open to understanding a new idea or knowledge.
AE.
1. Actually, yes I really do think that more teaching strategies should contain more visual things. I am a visual learner and I really like being able to see something and have it explained to me rather than having to just read about it. I believe that learning would be a little more fun for people and they would be more open to learn and it would be easier for the author to get his point across.
4. To me, the mask is something that can be either good or bad. It gives people different views of others and possibly can give ourselves a good or bad view (standard). Having a mask can change a lot of things such as how you think of yourself and others too. I feel like you are always aware of others around you, but the masks just amplify what happens. It gets the people goin!
Thoughts.
Overall, this article is my favorite so far out of all of the past ones we have read. The comics made it so mush more interesting and more fun to learn. I have definitely learned a lot from this chapter.
Berger.
Before You Read.
If I were to draw a picture of a woman, I think I would draw her facing me and she would be the only object in the drawing. The scene would be calming and charming. -Something enjoyable to look at. To be honest, I don't know if I would draw her naked. I am not sure which I would like to draw more (Especially because I am majoring in the art field). -I guess I will have to wait and see which I would like to do more.
Summary.
To me, in "Ways of Seeing", Berger is trying to get the point across that women have always been under the authority of men. He says that women have always put a show on for men because they have been trained to look good. He also says that women have been like objects throughout history. He basically is saying that even though so much has happened in our past, women haven't really changed much. -They are still looked at the same as they were in the past.
Synthesis.
I guess after reading this, it can relate to McClould's article. It just goes to show that viewers will always have their opinions about how they look at a picture, comic or a piece of art. They can learn something from what they see and use it in their own lives with what their feeling was when they saw it.
QD.
2. I believe that women are sexy and therefore are able to be shown in advertisements and art because of their beauty. They really are an eye candy especially to men and because of that, more people get attracted to whatever they are portraying. I think that these pictures/advertisements can get a little out of hand though. There is a time and a place for everything.
3. Well, I think that the roles of women today are different then they were in the past. Women have definitely moved up in our society and both men and women have a fair share in power these days.
AE.
3. Yes, I think that the way that the woman is portrayed in a painting can really show what the artist is trying to get across. -If the woman is happy, sad or mad. Though the artist could also be looking at a bigger picture and saying that women feel a certain way because of what is going on with the world.
MM.
Honestly, this whole time I have been answering all of these questions and reading the material, I could not come up with a definite answer to this one. I am not exactly sure why to be honest. Even thinking about how this can relate to writing, I just don't know if I have a correct answer. Though I do know that there will always be an audience for any kind of material like this. So whatever is being shown will be seen.
Thoughts.
This was an interesting article to read. I was a little confused an could grasp everything with it fully to be honest. Not that it wasn't interesting or anything, it just wasn't one of my favorite ones to read.

Response to the four videos.
I just decided to do all four responses so here they are.
How to Find a Book.
First off, this is about how to find a book in the library. Here are the steps of how to. On the library website search for the title of the book or for the topic of it. Narrow down what kind of book that you want because so many different choices of book will pop up from the first search. That will help with lowering the book count. An easy way to help break down the book count is to use the word "and" in the search bar. Then once again, look at the books that were chosen and see if it is available in the library. If it is available, then a map will pop up and will tell you where it is actually located in the library. Then, use the call number to go and fine the book. BE QUIET BECAUSE IT IS A LIBRARY. THen, look for signs that lead you towards the book. Look at the signs on the bookcase shelves for the call number. Once you find it, look for other book because there will be other ones with the same topic nearby. Finally, go to the 4th or 2nd floor to check the book out. (A student I.D. is needed to do so).
Finding Full Text from Citation.
If you have a citation but not a full text and that is what you want, here is what to do. Get the title of the article that you want and go to the library webpage. Click Alice and go to periodical title, type in the name or the title of the article). Then, click electronic resource. Find the right date, the volume and issue of the article. If it is there, you can get a PDF version of the full text of the article. If is not there, fill out the request and it will be sent to you for free.
How to get a Book from OHIOLink.
First, look for a specific book. If the status of the book isn't "available" then you will have to wait about three business days to receive it. Search OHIOLink to see if any copies are available. Any of the available ones in Ohio will pop up. Click request, then Ohio University. Use your I.D. (P ID number too) and then pick a place where you can pick the book up. When the book arrives, an email will be sent to your email saying that you can go pick the book up whenever.
Articles Plus-Finding Scholarship.
First, here is an overview of a scholarly article. What makes them different from other articles is the title, authors, abstract, introduction, article text, conclusions and works cited. Ok, so type in a topic so you can find the topics of what you are looking for. Some of the articles that pop up with have PDF's. Check if the full text is available or anywhere else in the library database. Then go to the electronic journal center. This can be very difficult, so don't be afraid to ask questions.

Project #1 Intro/synthesis. TOPIC: Having a Paper Flow
This is something that I have always had trouble with in writing papers. So I thought that doing research on it and actually seeing if a paper that flows makes more sense than one that doesn't. Also, if it makes the paper more interesting or not and makes the reader want to keep reading. I could give examples of papers or tell a story and write them differently. (Different styles one with flow and one without?? Just a thought). Here are some questions to ask or go over in the paper: Why do we read left to right and top to bottom? Does that help with the flow of a paper? Why do other cultures have different writing constructs and what are they? In a five paragraph essay, why does it have to be five paragraphs? Why do we start with stating our point in the thesis and end with the same point in our conclusion? Does supporting facts help with flow? I can compare and contrast these and see what I can come up with. I can also put in some do's and don'ts and breakdown what needs to be said in an order in a paragraph to make it the best that it can be. I just hope that I can become a better writer because I belief that writing is important and that is the ultimate goal.

Helping Students Use Textual Sources Persuasively
Before You Read.
I think the word fact means something that has to deal with the truth of a situation. In other words, it is something that can not be proven wrong at that period in time. The word claim is something that is stated or said but there is no proof to back it up; there is no evidence. I think the word opinion is something as you see and believe it. -What I just said is my own opinion. And finally, I think the word argument is an action that happens because people have different opinions on a topic.
Summary.
In the article, "Helping Students Use Textual Sources Persuasively", by Margaret Kantz, she get a point across that students don't really learn anything from writing research papers. They have sources, but none of what they write are their own ideas and therefore, the paper lacks what a really good research paper needs. Basically, the rhetoric can have different "stages". Bottom line, writing a paper that is the writers own, is much better than a paper that is very similar to the sources it came from.
Synthesis.
Kantz is trying to make the reader a better writer. She is very smart and it is easy to see that she also thinks that people (students), need to use sources. But she thinks that from using the sources only, the writer won't have his or her own paper because they won't learn anything or take anything away from all of their research. In a way, both Kantz and Klein get the point across that sources are good. Also, Kants, just like Greene, uses framing to get her point across more clearly.
Questions For Discussion and Journaling.
1. Well, I think Kantz is saying that everything that is heard or seen can be different from other sources previously seen or heard. To me, it seems as if the reader (in whatever is being read), is going to believe what is said. Whether what was stated was an opinion or fact. Opinions are a little different because the reader may have a different stand point on the issue. Overall, these three words, facts, opinions and arguments can be taken by the reader how he or she wants to take them and given a situation can make it how they want to have it seen or heard. -They can change it to what they believe is true possibly because there are different sources, dealing with the same idea but that have different stories or views on it.
2. Personally, yes, I do think she is correct. I looked back at all of the things that students didn't know and I was one of those students too. After reading this article though, my knowledge has widened (once again) and now I am able to think to myself when reading something, "is the the truth? Is this an opinion?". I am able to look at something and make my own judgement call on it and to really think about if what is being said is true (along the lines) or not.
Applying and Exploring Ideas.
2. Before coming into this class and before I started to learn about some of these new ideas, I truthfully thought that gathering information from different sources was kind of boring and thats just the way I saw research. After going through all different sources, I would rearrange all of what I learned in my head and spell it out on my paper. Kantz is basically saying to be creative and write the paper. Don't just reword all of what you just learned from doing research. Make it your own paper with your own thoughts and ideas. I don't see these ideas overlapping really too much. -Bottom line, research is needed to write a paper. But it is what you do with the research and what you do with it to make the paper the best that it can be. From reading this article, Kantz has taught me to not only be creative and make the paper more thoughtful by not just being so bland with the sources but to also make what I have learned better and to take it to the next level.
Meta Moment.
For me, I think that Kantz is trying to analyze the truth in all sources. Fact or opinion, I believe that she is just saying to be careful and to do your own research. Be creative with what you do hear and make it the truth. I think it would be useful because then you can be sure that something that you are writing is true or not.
After Reading/Thoughts.
Overall, this was another very interesting topic to learn about. Kantz is trying to get the point across that sources are and can be very useful if you do the right thing with them. It is what you take out of the multiple sources and to make it into something more creative and better than it was before.
